Introduction:
Velindre Cancer Centre is looking for an imaginative and motivated visual artist to become Artist in Residence within our Radiology Department.
The Velindre Cancer Centre provides specialist cancer services to over 1.5 million people in South East Wales and beyond. Each day it delivers lifesaving radiotherapy, chemotherapy and non-surgical treatment as well as cutting edge cancer research.
The Arts in Health programme at Velindre aims to bring art and creativity into the hospital environment with a varied programme of participatory projects on and off-site. We are keen to expand this work further as there is a growing body of evidence that art in a hospital environment improves the mental health, resilience, social support and communication of people with cancer.
Location:
Velindre Cancer Centre, Whitchurch, Cardiff
The Project:
The residency will be with the Radiology Department. Radiology uses medical imaging to diagnose diseases and guide their treatment, this includes:
- General Radiography (Digital Radiography)
- Computed Tomography (CT scanning)
- Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI scanning)
- Ultrasound scanning
Fluoroscopy (real time non vascular interventional imaging)
Over the course of the residency, you will work with radiology patients and staff, using your artistic practice to respond creatively to the department. The aim is to become an integral part of the Velindre’s developing Arts in Health programme and growing calendar of creative activity across the hospital.
You will be expected to:
- Deliver a minimum of 4 participatory workshops for staff and patients.
- Have ‘open studios’ where you showcase what you are working on.
- Produce physical outcomes from the residency – including artwork which can be displayed in the department.
- A written report evaluating your residency.
Funding:
Artists in residence will be paid a fixed fee of £4,999 which is inclusive of all transport, preparation time and public presentations during the residency period. The fee will be paid in two instalments against artists’ invoices, the first at the start of the residency and the second at the conclusion of the residency, including any public events.
There is a materials budget of £2000.
You will require:
- Full DBS
- Public Liability Insurance
- A good understanding of arts in health and how to deliver collaborative art projects
- 2 years of experience of working in a healthcare setting and with patients
If this proposal excites you or if you have anymore questions, we'd love to hear from you! Please send a cover letter outlining your proposal for the residency and a copy of your CV, along with 5 pictures of your work to sally.thelwell@wales.nhs.uk
