The Orchestra Manager, BBC National Orchestra of Wales works closely with the rest of the orchestra management team to drive a vision for the orchestra as a key cultural and artistic asset for the country of Wales alongside its existing commitment to providing outstanding content for BBC broadcast, primarily on BBC Radio 3.
BBC NOW is an orchestra of the future and has incredible resources at its disposal to make a real difference through the work that it delivers. This role will be key to delivering that difference and bringing the BBC NOW musicians along with the change, to support them and ensure that they can still give their very best performance on every occasion.
The role is a management position, reporting to the Director and taking full responsibility for the day to day operational management of the orchestra’s busy schedule and line management of our musicians, leading the operations team.
The BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales occupies a special role as both a BBC broadcast orchestra and the national symphony orchestra of Wales. The Orchestra is generously supported by the Arts Council of Wales and is proud to work with an outstanding group of conductors.
As one of the six BBC Orchestras and Choirs, the Orchestra has a busy schedule of recordings, broadcasts and concerts for BBC Radio 3, BBC Radio Wales, BBC Radio Cymru, BBC Films and BBC television. Education is also at the heart of our work, developing innovative projects to increase accessibility to classical music and engaging with communities across Wales.
The ideal candidate will have experience of managing orchestral musicians, with exceptional organisation and communication skills. Alongside these, the successful candidate will have the ability to empathise with the working life of a professional musician, creating the best environment to allow them to perform at the highest standards. You will ideally have substantial experience in the management of musical events and activities, and working with musicians including undertaking individual verbal reviews. A proven track record in managing a diverse team to deliver all operational aspects of the orchestra is important. You will also need to have a thorough knowledge of orchestral personnel and financial procedures, contractual arrangements and Musicians’ Union agreements, along with a clear understanding of budgets and to be able to monitor and maintain departmental budgets.
