Amgueddfa Cymru, the National Library of Wales and the Arts Council of Wales is working together in the creation, governance, leadership, management, and delivery of the National Contemporary Art Gallery for Wales.

The three partners share a vision for the delivery of a unique national project based upon a dispersed model of galleries across Wales, enhanced by the host galleries. The Gallery will operate upon principles of co-creation and co-curation with contemporary artists and the communities of Wales, drawing upon the contemporary collections of Amgueddfa Cymru and the National Library of Wales and through the commissioning of artists.

Significant consultation has taken place with the sector to understand demand and interest in the development of a National Contemporary Art Gallery for Wales. The wide-ranging feasibility report produced by Event in 2018 showed significant support for the concept from venues, artists and other professionals working in the sector. This interest and willingness to support the project has been reinforced by the detailed development study undertaken by Rural Office of Architecture.

The project is now at a point where capital redevelopment of the 9 host galleries needs to be undertaken to ensure they comply with the Government Indemnity Scheme in order to move the project forward to the next stage. Detailed venue audits have been prepared by Rural Office Architecture, which outline the work needed to meet the requirements. This includes an estimate budget which includes telemetry and security, preventative maintenance and additional allowances where needed.

The Project Team, led by a freelance Project Director, now require additional freelance support from a PRINCE2 qualified Project Manager to help support the delivery of the capital redevelopment of the 9 galleries that form part of the distributed National Contemporary Art Gallery for Wales. This role is to ensure work is completed and funds committed by the Phase 1 completion date of March 2025 and to discharge other project management responsibilities as required.

The freelance Project Manager will work with the Project Director on an ad hoc basis to create/advise and monitor, update and report on a suite of project management documents suitable for a project of this size to support the project delivery and complement the current working structure, such as:  comprehensive risk log, dependencies log, benefits realisation plan and other key documents identified to ensure the smooth delivery of the project and oversee the programme to ensure key milestones are met.

In addition to this key area of work regarding project documentation, the project manager will:

  • Act as point of contact for ongoing support to the gallery network in respect of the capital programme at each
  • Support project assurance and monitoring
  • Provide programme updates to the NCAGW Project Director in writing and verbally as requested.

Successful bids will provide practical evidence of the following:

  • PRINCE2 Certified Practitioner
  • Minimum of 3 years Professional Project Management Experience
  • Understanding of complex projects with multiple partners and stakeholders
  • Knowledge of working within local authority context

The value of this freelance contract is £32,400 (inclusive of VAT)

The contract is anticipated to run from January 2024 – March 2025.
