‘Can creative explorations into Welsh Culture develop confidence in oracy through Welsh for a mixed ability year 8 class?’

Ysgol Calon Cymru is a dual stream High School with campuses in both Llandrindod Wells and in Builth Wells. This LCS project will be working with the Welsh stream Year 8 class who are based in Builth Wells.

We would like 1 or 2 Creative Practitioners to work with us on a fun and engaging exploration into Welsh Culture.

Our primary focus is in building confidence and vocabulary of Welsh Oracy through dynamic & authentic learning experiences. Whilst simultaneously enabling teachers to build & develop new and authentic teaching strategies to enable them to teach & deliver the new Welsh curriculum more creatively.

Creative Practitioners

We would like at least one of our Creative Practitioners to be able to deliver their engagement with the class through Wesh language. However, this will be a bilingual project and all planning meetings and documentation will be conducted both written & verbally in English/bilingually. There may also be some sharing with the English Stream pupils at the end of the project but this is to be explored when we are clearer on what the project will involve.

We would also happily consider a collaboration of 2 Creative Practitioners with one Welsh speaking and one not. So please feel welcome to apply if you are not a Wesh Speaking practitioner but you are interested in working collaboratively and willing to use some Welsh Language and become a learner alongside the pupils.

We are open to applications from a wide range of potential Creative Practitioners including:

Artists of all many disciplines, Scientists, Historians, Poets, Creative Writers, Storytellers, Film Makers, Digital practitioners, Drama/Theatre makers, Design Technology practitioners, Illustrators

Year 8 say they would like to develop skills in Welsh Language to:

Understand more Welsh, Speak the language of my country, Understand things other people can’t, to speak more than one language, to understand the world

When asked what interest them about Welsh culture they said:

Llewelyn, Mabinogi Stories, The Art that people create, Welsh Artists, Welsh Cakes, Welsh singing, landscape, farming, Sport especially Rugby

When asked how they liked being creative:

Art, Design, Drawing, Photography, Sports, Being with people

  • Ability to work on developing ideas as a team.
  • Happy to be part of a bilingual project with a Welsh Stream group of learners where Welsh language will be a primary focus.

Fee

£300 per day

There are approximately 12 Creative Practitioner days in total.

Should a collaboration between 2 CP’s take place we would look at the split of days together with the successful CP’s as part of the project planning as we would anticipate some solo work and some collaborative work.

Fees are in place to cover planning, implementation and evaluation.

There is a small additional budget for materials.
