Commission Summary

Swansea Council is inviting applications from suitably qualified and experienced artists/designers/architects/creative practitioners to create a bespoke and distinctive artwork to honour and remember those impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Job Description

The aim of the commission is to produce an artwork that will function as a memorial and location for remembrance and reflection, as well as provide an attractive and thoughtful addition to the public realm, with an aesthetic sympathetic to its surrounds. 

In addition, the Covid Memorial will be required to achieve the following objectives:

  • Distinctiveness – the creation of a unique piece of work, whether this is two or three dimensional, landscaped or utility feature eg seating, that is original and site specific/responsive.
  • Quality – the work contributes to the physical quality of the environment and the experience of those using it.
  • Sense of place – by drawing on key local references relating to Swansea and its communities.
  • Is able to be designed, manufactured and installed within the budget available.

Job requirements

  • Creative originality, artistic quality and professionalism in their work
  • The ability and desire to work collaboratively as part of their creative practice, in particular as part of an extended interdisciplinary project team.
  • A self-motivated, energetic and pro-active work ethic.
  • An understanding of the issues of connectivity and the challenges inherent within delivering emotive works with community engagement and partnership working.
  • Proven ability to deliver high quality permanent art projects in the public realm on time and within budget, demonstrating considerations of intellectual access, maintenance and construction methodology.
  • Capacity to undertake the commission within the proposed timescale.

The budget for the commission is £75,000 to cover all fees, materials, fabrication and installation.  All fees and costs are exclusive of VAT.
