Introduction
RCT Arts & Cultural Service is excited to announce its new Artist in Service programme.
Built on consultation with Lisa Baxter (The Experience Business) and feedback from the CABAN project (2023-24), the Artist in Service programme provides an opportunity for a local artist to develop their creative practice through engagement with communities in RCT.
This opportunity is open to artists working in any art form and at any experience level. We’re particularly interested in hearing from people who have a genuine interest in engaging with communities. Some prior experience of this is desirable but not essential.
Importantly, we do not expect this activity to result in the production of an original artistic work. Likewise, we’re not interested in a series of participatory workshops. Instead, we’re looking for someone who will meaningfully engage with communities through their artistic practice, the findings of which will inform our future programming.
This new role is made possible by support from Arts Council Wales. We expect this to be a rolling 3-year programme with an opportunity for several artists to engage over the duration of the funding period. In this first phase there will be a specific geographic focus on Treorchy and the surrounding areas (Blaenrhondda, Blaencwm, Treherbert, Cwmparc, Pentre). You do not have to be resident in any of these areas to apply, and future roles will focus on other RCT locations.
In short, we see this as an opportunity for an artist to do 3 things:
- Engage with communities in Treorchy.
- Develop their artistic practice.
- Inform RCT Arts & Cultural Service planning and programming.
As previously mentioned, this is a new initiative and the scope for the incumbent to shape the role is significant.
