This July, In Character / Mewn Cymeriad will tour their one-woman show, 'Kate', which tells the story about the Welsh writer, Kate Roberts.

The play is written and directed by Janet Aethwy, and stepping into Kate's shoes will be the versatile actress and a very familiar face to Pobol y Cwm fans, Sera Cracroft. Sera has been playing Eileen on Pobol y Cwm since 1989. This will be the first time she has taken on the challenge of a one-person play. She said:

'I can recall seeing a black and white photograph of Kate Roberts as an elderly woman looking over her glasses, on the wall at Ysgol Plas, my primary school, when I was about 9 years old. I remember thinking that she looked sad and wondering why she felt that way. Some years later I had the opportunity to appreciate her work when I played the role of Mrs Huws, the Minister's unwanted wife, in the film Y Mynydd Grug. I saw, through her characters, how much of a genius she was as a writer. I'm looking forward to portraying Kate Roberts' in all her complexity, and to return to the stage, where I started my career.'

Janet Aethwy said:

'Kate Roberts was crowned ‘brehines ein llên’ – the queen of our literature - and she worked non-stop for her country and language throughout her life. She once stated that she "had to write to avoid suffocation"; and as I wrote about one of my favourite Welsh laureates, I began to understand what was suffocating her and why she thought that life is essentially a tragedy. Behind every good storyteller there is an even better story.'

Ffion Glyn from In Character/ Mewn Cymeriad said:

‘As a company, we are committed to bringing Welsh history to life for audiences, both young and old, across the whole of Wales. With the company celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, we are delighted to offer a follow-up to our recent series of productions, Cranogwen, Annie Cwrt Mawr and Dai with a play about Kate Roberts.’
