Theatr Iolo and The Riverfront are looking for schools in and around the Newport area to take part in PLAYHOUSE 2024.
Delivered nationally across the UK, Playhouse is a unique participatory national theatre project that connects schools with professional theatres, scriptwriters and theatre makers, so they may be inspired and empowered to experience the benefits of professional theatre making.
PLAYHOUSE:
- Builds UK National connections between theatres and schools.
- Hosts the biggest library of bespoke, specially commissioned scripts aimed at the children’s age and class size.
- Sees children and teachers work alongside professional playwrights who write relevant scripts for children.
- Offers a positive life experience for children that has a long-term transformative impact.
- Combats the decline of drama teaching and provision in primary schools.
FOR TEACHERS
PLAYHOUSE is an enriching and comprehensive CPD program that connects teachers with playwrights and theatre makers. Teachers learn rehearsal and directing techniques and develop the skills and confidence they need to bring drama into the classroom.
Teachers feel empowered through practical support from the Playhouse team, who are committed to helping schools overcome any barriers.
Teachers work with specially commissioned professional playwrights who develop scripts that are relevant and topical for young people today. The easy-to-deliver Playhouse project ensures minimal props and costumes, which makes it cost-effective and practical to achieve.
FOR CHILDREN
PLAYHOUSE provides children with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to perform on stage in front of friends, family and public audiences, alongside other schools in the project.
Proven to see a transformation across children’s learning, understanding and awareness of theatre making and across their soft and social skills. The children take part in fun workshops in their schools to introduce them to creative play and drama techniques. They will also gain experience in ‘behind the scenes’ of their local professional theatre and help them to gain knowledge and skills on how to bring a play to life on stage.
Children will perform high-quality, age-appropriate scripts that have been specially commissioned by a professional playwright and will feature themes that will be relevant and topical to them. In bringing their characters to life, children will be able to have heartfelt, authentic conversations about big issues in the world today and learn to express themselves freely as they experience the joy of theatre.
PLAYHOUSE 2024 is being delivered at Theatre Royal Plymouth, York Theatre Royal, Theatr Iolo and Landmark Theatre.
