Write Within has opened the call for a residency to offer a writer of minoritized identity a seven-night stay at the Writers’ Cabin, situated just outside Machynlleth mid-Wales, with a £100 stipend. The residency runs from Monday 10 – Monday 17 February 2025 inclusive. The deadline to apply is Monday 2 September 2024.

The Write Within Residency is for writers working in any genre and at any stage of their career based in the UK or Ireland who are of minoritized identity, e.g. those who identify as working class, writers of colour, disabled, and/or as LGBTQIA2S+.

The intention of this self-directed residency is that it will offer sanctuary to a writer to take some time out from their everyday life to concentrate on their work-in-progress. There is no obligation to write a commission, to deliver any public-facing events during their stay or to report on their progress at the end of their residency. In fact, the opposite is encouraged – that the writer uses their time to enjoy the tranquillity of the retreat to write, read, research and dream.

Applications are assessed by Write Within’s Julia Forster along with Si Griffiths and Ayisha de Lanerolle on the basis of an Artist Statement in the form of a one-page letter or a two-minute video in which we invite writers to:

·  Summarize their work-in-progress in one short paragraph

·  Outline which aspects of their current project pose the greatest challenges

·  Explain what success has so far resulted from their project

·  Describe what their vision is for the future of their project

·  Explain how the Write Within Residency would support their aspirations for their work-in-progress

Who can Apply

Any writer based in the UK or Ireland over the age of 18 who identifies as working class, a writer of colour, disabled and/or as LGBTQIA2S+. Writers can be working a work-in-progress in any genre and can be at any stage of their project and career. The Write Within Residency is designed for writers who are seeking some solo reflection time away from their everyday commitments to undertake self-led work.

Please note that due to the surrounding terrain, the cabin and shower block is unfortunately not wheelchair accessible. We encourage all applications to visit this page first to ensure they will be comfortable: https://writewithin.wales/writers-cabin/ A document outlining access is forthcoming and will shortly be available on the website. Additionally, the Residency page includes FAQs: https://writewithin.wales/write-within-residency/

What’s included:

The Cabin has one double bed, with bed linen and towels provided as well as a fully equipped kitchen/diner and a writing desk. The writer will have heating, electricity, and private use of a separate private shower-room and toilet. The Write Within Residency is self-catered and the writer will need to bring their own food and writing materials (e.g. laptop).

Write Within has partnered with Philip Gwyn Jones at Greyhound Literary to offer an optional online 1:1, should the writer be at a point where some industry insight would be beneficial. A sixty-minute face-to-face coaching session with author coach Julia Forster is also included, if the writer desires.
