The Kickstart Scheme (run by Department of Work and Pensions, UK Government) provides funding to create new jobs for 16 to 24 year olds on Universal Credit who are at risk of long term unemployment. Employers of all sizes can apply for funding until 17 December 2021 which covers:
- 100% of the National Minimum Wage (or the National Living Wage depending on the age of the participant) for 25 hours per week for a total of 6 months
- associated employer National Insurance contributions
- minimum automatic enrolment pension contributions
Employers can spread the job start dates up until 31 March 2022. You’ll get funding for 6 months once the young person has started their job.
Further funding is available for training and support so that young people on the scheme can get a job in the future.

This is a unique opportunity for arts and creative organisations to create paid ways into the sector for young people whilst recognising and benefiting from the value and input they bring.
For more information from an arts and creative perspective, the Kickstart Cymru Call to Action webinar covers Cultural Contracts, tips on Kickstart Job Roles plus opportunities for progression, skills and training, a Fair Work approach. You will understand how to register with the scheme, the resources available and how to work with Job Coaches to reach applicants.
The event was recorded before the deadline extension. It was supported by Arts Active, Arts Council Wales and University Arts London Awarding Body.
3 minute Call to Action has also been co-created by the Youth Panel (Panel members: Arabella Bradley; Gwernan Brooks; Chris Corish; Kiara Sullivan; Fahadi Mukulu; Nirushan Sudursan). The panel advocate that kickstart employers ensure fair pay, recognising everyone's value and input, supporting collective skills sharing & development.
