Background
The National Library of Wales is one of twelve specially chosen venues across the UK to partner with the National Gallery, London for a project celebrating the Gallery’s bicentenary in 2024.
Each partner venue will receive a masterpiece from the Gallery’s collection and will curate around it, involving interpretation, community engagement and events, or exhibitions. The displays will all open simultaneously on 10 May 2024, the 200th anniversary of the National Gallery’s opening in London. The National Gallery will be kindly loaning the masterpiece ‘The Stonemason’s Yard’, c. 1725 by Canaletto to the National Library which will form the centrepiece in an exhibition.
Exhibition
The exhibition will tell the story of how the painting amongst other treasures came to Wales as a ‘refugee’ during the Second World War, along with the artistic and thematic links between The Stonemasons Yard and the topography of Wales, industry and Welsh life.
Delivery
We are looking for an artist or coordinator to work in partnership with The National Library of Wales and charity GISDA to deliver an exciting project to coincide with the exhibition and deliver a creative project within communities in industrial areas in north Wales (areas around Manod / Ffestiniog desirable).
The coordinator would be expected to plan one or a series of creative events with a physical or digital outcome and emphasis on inspiring communities and legacy.
We would like to reach out to vulnerable young people age 14 – 25 years.
The successful applicant will receive a budget of £2000 funded by the National Gallery and in-kind support from the National Library and GISDA.
Timescale
The activity must be planned during the course of or prior to the exhibition which runs from 10th May until 7th September 2024.
Evaluation
This project seeks qualitative interactions, meaningful engagement and evaluation, rather than targeting large groups of people.
Application information
Plan one or a series of creative events or activities that engage with a targeted community / area and relate to the exhibition and theme identified above.
Applicants would be expected to deliver or organise the activity and cooperate with the National Library of Wales on other aspects such as evaluation and reporting, budgeting and marketing in accordance with the brief.
We are looking for an individual with the following:
- Experience of working in partnership with community groups
- Experience in art practice
- Good organisational skills – ability to deliver projects on time and to a high standard
- Great communication skills
- Innovation and creativity – ability to challenge and push boundaries
- Bilingualism – ability to work in Welsh and English
- Knowledge and understanding of the Partners and their collections
- A current DBS check and an ability to adhere to the Library’s safeguarding procedures and policies.

Evaluation Criteria
The successful applicant will be expected to keep within the set budget and to liaise with the representatives from the National Library of Wales / GISDA during the planning, organisation and delivery of the project.
