Callout for a Creative Practitioner for Ysgol Penrhyn Primary School
Location – School Lane, New Broughton, Wrexham, LL11 6SF
We have an exciting opportunity for a very special artist! We are taking part in the ‘Lead Creative Schools’ scheme run by the Arts Council of Wales, and are looking for innovative and original creative practitioner(s) to work both indoors and outdoors with our Year 5 class (around 24 pupils), starting in September 2024.
We are asking the question:
‘Can a creative approach to transforming one of our outdoor space(s) help our learners to develop and improve their resilience and problem-solving ability by giving them transferable skills - so that they can grow and flourish both as members of their school and their wider community?’
We have several outdoor spaces that are full of potential, and are looking for an inspiring artist to facilitate our Year 5 in designing, building and creating a new ‘garden’; one that is calming and peaceful, and can be used by all of our school-pupils in a variety of ways to enhance their well-being.
We have a blank sheet. Nothing is fixed, not even the exact location of our new space. We imagine our journey will involve design, art, science, mathematics, and practical hands-on craft skills involving the use of recycled materials. But it could lead anywhere!
We want our learners to explore and investigate. We want them to develop vital skills such as independence, co-operation and collaboration. We want them to grow in confidence and self-belief. And we would welcome the involvement of our wider community in our pupils’ adventure.
Main sessions should be delivered in English, but we will celebrate the use of Welsh in our journey.
We are looking for:
Practitioner(s) who can support, inspire, facilitate and enable our pupils in evolving their creative ideas.
Practitioner(s) who are brilliant collaborators, flexible in their working approach, and able to reflect upon, adapt and build upon pupil ideas.
Practitioner(s) who are confident when working with children, staff, and community members.
What we can offer:
10 days delivery (TBC), plus approximately 3 days for planning, celebration and evaluation. (If two practitioners are appointed, this time would be divided between them.)
A standard rate of £300 per day, plus reasonable expenses for travel and resource, to be negotiated.
A budget for materials, to be negotiated.
Practitioner(s) must be available on:
Wednesday 12th June 2024 for interview, to include delivering a practical short session with a small group of our Year 5 learners.
Tuesday 18th June 2024, when the successful practitioner(s) will meet the whole class and planning will take place.
Practitioners must be ‘Lead Creative Schools’ trained or able to complete this training before the project starts. Training will take place from 9am-4.30pm on 26th June 2024 at Colwyn Bay.
Successful candidate(s) will also need to undergo an enhanced DBS check or provide evidence of an up-to-date DBS through the update service.
Our enquiry is due to start on or from 9th September 2024 and will run until 25th October. We will remain flexible, hoping to spend 1 or 2 days each week with our Creative Practitioner.
How to apply:
Please send an application to our Year 5 pupils as they will play an important role in selecting the practitioner(s).
Please send a CV no longer then two sides of A4, and a cover letter or video, that outlines how you would approach the project.
Please include any photographs/ visual aids from previous projects, as we will be excited to see your work.
