Tomorrow (0930-1100, Tuesday 28th September) will see Phil George, Chair Arts Council of Wales, contributing to a discussion on how to “Build Back Fairer: The NHS in context of social determinants of health”.

During that discussion, he will be drawing attention to the significant contribution the arts can make to wellbeing in Wales. He will be focusing in particular on the Arts Council of Wales’ arts and health programme which has cooperated closely, through the MOU between both organisations, with the Welsh NHS Confederation to boost the importance of the arts to wellbeing.

Commenting ahead of his contribution, Phil George said:

“Arts and health has been a key element of the Arts Council of Wales’ activity for some years, and is growing in importance with each passing year. The pandemic of the past 20 months has showed how the arts can be a solace at difficult times as well as an inspiration and a contributor to wellbeing at all times.

“Two words sum up the focus of our Arts and Health work – partnerships and equalities. Whether it’s with the Welsh NHS Confederation or with the Baring Foundation in an exciting new programme addressing mental health, partnerships are changing the landscape in Wales. And the Arts Council of Wales’s priority commitment to improving equality of access to the arts is dynamically advanced through engagement with health and social care workers and institutions.

“I look forward very much to what I’m sure will be an invigorating discussion tomorrow with Prof Sir Michael Marmot (Bevan Commissioner) Dr Tracey Cooper (Chief Executive Public Health Wales), Paul Morris (Head of Police Liaison Unit Welsh Government) and Councillor Susan Ellsmore (Leader Cardiff Council).”
