A new project from Menter Iaith Abertawe will see regular Welsh language cinema nights at the Tŷ Tawe venue in Swansea city centre.
Starting with monthly film nights on the last Monday for every month, the project aims to build on Menter Iaith Abertawe’s wider work of providing opportunities to use and enjoy the Welsh language in the area.
The programme will feature classic films from the S4C and National Library of Wales archives, as well as new releases.
All events are completely free to attend and will also feature additional fringe events such as live performances and Q&A sessions over the course of the initial programme. Where possible, screenings will also include English language subtitles to improve access for Welsh language learners and new speakers.
The project started with a screening of the Oscar nominated “Hedd Wyn” and will continue this January with the cult horror classic from 1975, “Gwaed ar y Sêr”.
Dafydd Mills, development officer for Menter Iaith Abertawe said - “This new project is a great way to advertise Welsh language cinema, especially to new speakers who may not have come across these films before. There is something for everyone in the programme, from the classics like Hedd Wyn, to new releases such as Y Sŵn. Opportunities to see Welsh language cinema are relatively limited, and so we believe offering a regular platform like this will be an important asset to the local community.”
