CAT’s Zero Carbon Britain Innovation Lab will bring together a diverse group of people to help develop the Strategy using a co-design process, including artists, arts organisations, and environmental specialists.

The Strategy for Climate Justice and the Arts, commissioned by Arts Council of Wales in partnership with Natural Resources Wales, will look at issues such as using the arts to connect people with the nature and climate emergencies and the support that is needed for artists and arts organisations to minimise the environmental impact of creating art.

Crucially, the Strategy will provide a roadmap for the arts in Wales to make maximum progress towards key environmental issues including reducing the carbon footprint, preserving nature and biodiversity and meeting Welsh Government targets of a carbon neutral public sector by 2030 and a net zero Wales by 2050.

The Zero Carbon Britain Innovation Lab will host a series of online workshops between November 2022 and March 2023. You can find out more about the process and how to get involved by signing up to attend our briefing session on Tuesday 11th October 2022 16:00-17:00 here: https://events.zoom.us/e/view/7l9Lb5JARUC3BKi4TPcdvg?id=7l9Lb5JARUC3BKi4TPcdvg

It’s also possible to take part in the co-design process by responding to an online survey:  A Climate Justice Strategy for the Arts Sector in Wales

The survey will close on Wednesday 16th November 2022.

“Creativity is key to tackling the enormous challenges posed by the climate and nature emergencies. The arts in Wales have a central role to play through their potential to imagine, connect, communicate, and create change. Arts Council of Wales is deeply committed to making sure that we support sustainable ways of working, and we’re delighted to be working with the Centre for Alternative Technology to develop our first Strategy for Climate Justice and the Arts alongside Natural Resources Wales and partners from across the arts and environmental sectors .”

Michael Elliot, Chief Executive of Arts Council of Wales.

"We are delighted to be working with the Arts Council of Wales on this strategy as part of our continuing Creative Nature partnership. The climate and nature emergencies are now a part of our everyday lives, and we need all hands-on deck to address the changes that are to come. The development of this strategy recognises the power of the arts to connect people with nature and help them find a voice in the conversation we need to have about our future. In centring itself on social justice, addressing inequality and promoting internationalism, it shows Wales to be the globally responsible nation we are all striving for."

Clare Pillman, Chief Executive at Natural Resources Wales.

“We are thrilled to be working with ACW on the development of a climate justice strategy for the arts sector. The arts sector have a crucial role to play in addressing the climate and biodiversity crisis and ensuring that climate justice is an integral part of this journey is vital.  We are really looking forward to working with individuals, groups and organisations from all over Wales to inform and shape the strategy. The lab process ensures that all voices are heard and that the final product (the strategy) is accessible, effective and fit for use”

Dr Anna Bullen, Innovation Lab Manager at the Centre for Alternative Technology.
