• Written by Katie Elin-Salt and directed by Alice Eklund, this brand new show with songs is the perfect introduction to theatre for children aged three to six
  • Little Red Riding Hood is performed at Sherman Theatre (25 Nov 2024-4 Jan 2025) following a tour of five south Wales venues in November
  • A Welsh-language version, Yr Hugan Fach Goch, will be performed alongside the English
  • Meanwhile, A Christmas Carol, the company’s smash hit 2021 festive show for everyone aged seven and upwards, returns to Sherman Theatre (22 Nov 2024-4 Jan 2025)

Sherman Theatre’s Christmas production for younger children, Little Red Riding Hood, will tour venues in south Wales this November, before returning to Cardiff for a six-week run at the Sherman.

Filled with songs and laughter, this new version of the classic tale is the story everyone loves, but with an added delicious and delightful twist. It will be performed in an informal environment in separate performances; Little Red Riding Hood in English, and Yr Hugan Fach Goch in Welsh, translated by Lily Beau

Christmas! It’s all about the presents, right? Giving and receiving them (but mainly receiving them). At least that’s what Red thinks... especially when a super cool new red cape turns up in her stocking! But when she gets lost in the woods on the way to her grandma’s house, her encounters with a hungry wolf show her that maybe Christmas is about more than just playing with her new toys.

Writer Katie Elin-Salt, who wrote Hansel and Gretel/Hansel a Gretel, last year’s Sherman Studio Christmas show for ages three to six, said: “I am thrilled to be invited back to write another Christmas story for the brilliant young audiences of Sherman Theatre. It has been a pleasure to write, and I hope this story helps to support children in exploring all the things that can make each Christmas feel so special - love, laughter, joy, excitement and quality time spent with our best people.”

Little Red Riding Hood is performed by a cast of two actor-musicians; Grace O’Brien, who performed in Sherman Theatre’s The Snow Queen in 2019, and Mari Fflur, who audiences will remember played a whole host of roles in Sherman Theatre’s Hansel and Gretel/Hansel a Gretel last year.

Joining Alice Eklund in the creative team are Set and Costume Designer Llew Morgan, Composer and Musical Director James Williams, Lighting Designer Ceri James, Sound Designer Josh Bowles and Elin Phillips as Assistant Director, part of Sherman Theatre’s Trainee Welsh Language Director initiative. Hansel and Gretel/Hansel a Gretel are supported by Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru.

Over the past four decades, Sherman Theatre’s Christmas productions have introduced generations of children from across south Wales to the magic of theatre, with engaging new takes on classic stories. In recent years, the company’s Studio Christmas shows have traditionally offered a joyous, contemporary twist on a much-loved fairytale, alongside a larger-scale show in the Main House for older children.

This year, as well as the touring production of Little Red Riding Hood/Yr Hugan Fach Goch, by popular demand Sherman Theatre is bringing its smash hit 2021 Christmas show for older children, A Christmas Carol, back to the Main House (22 Nov 2024-4 Jan 2025).
