Clwb Ifor Bach is an established grassroots music venue and charity in the heart of Cardiff and has been a home for new and emerging music in the capital for over 40 years.

Project Overview

Clwb Ifor Bach is preparing to enter a new phase in its lifecycle. Having most recently operated as a community interest company the (then) Directors migrated the organisation to a registered charity, with ambitions to deliver public benefit across Wales’ contemporary music ecology. This business planning project will support the Trustees to realise the creative ambition for the organisation through planning and piloting a wider programme of artistic work.

The project will be instrumental in developing an artistic programme and supporting implementation plan for the charity that is informed by the organisation’s experience, the needs of the wider contemporary music sector in Wales, learning from leading charitable music venues across the UK and links with wider key policy considerations and government priorities such as the new cultural strategy, movement to a wellbeing nation, skills strategy, disability task force priorities and Wales anti racism plan.

Key tasks

  • Establish baseline of Clwb’s contribution to identified workflows in the   Theory of Change
  • To determine areas of improvement to existing work, and areas of new work
  • Formalise reporting, management and quality assurance in respect of this process
  • Identify key partner and working approaches
  • Undertake a resourcing appraisal
  • Improving understanding of Clwb’s existing audience, and the development potential based on audience segmentation
  • Specific deep dive considerations in respect of EDI and access
  • Offer scrutiny to plans by consulting with key internal and external stakeholders
  • Link artistic plans to Clwb’s capital development aspirations
  • Risk analysis - Develop an impact measurement process and wider quality assurance / evaluation framework
  • Integrate artistic plan into wider business plan
  • Work with Trustees to refine Theory of Change
  • Manage Project Advisory Group ensuring the full benefits of their knowledge is realised in the project
  • Hand over Artistic Plan to Staff and Trustees in a meaningful way
  • Identify key learning for external dissemination

  • Understanding of at least some of the following areas - priorities in the Plan for Government, Future Generations Goals, Cultural Sector Development Models, The music venue network in Wales and the Contemporary Music Sector (Wales and/or UK).

Role Summary: Freelance Post / Remote Working

Fee: up to £28,000 (ex. VAT)
