On 1 October 2025, Christina Macaulay was appointed as a new member to Arts Council of Wales following an open competition earlier in 2025. She has over three decades of experience working in the arts sector and is passionate about music and supporting emerging talent.

ACW members are responsible for setting the aims and objectives of Arts Council of Wales and for ensuring that these are aligned to the Welsh Government’s strategic priorities.

Their roles, which are voluntary and unpaid, include ensuring that both Welsh Government and National Lottery funding is invested effectively across Wales to support the Arts.

Biography

Christina moved from Scotland to Cardiff back in 1993 to establish an arts series for BBC Wales - The Slate.   Since then she has been responsible for a wide range of arts and music programmes including Cardiff Singer of the World; The Story of Welsh Art; Wales: Music Nation, many documentaries, festival coverage and orchestral concerts.  For over 10 years she was Commissioning Editor specialising in factual programmes.  She left the BBC in March 2025 and is currently freelancing, and spending more time on her passion for music and arts.   She is on the board of Tŷ Cerdd and recently joined the board of Arts Active.

As an amateur music maker herself, she sings with the early music choir, Welsh Camerata, and plays low D whistle in regular folk sessions.  Her love of Welsh folk music has led her to help run Clera who promote traditional music from Wales.  Christina is passionate about supporting emerging talent and regularly attends cultural events of all kinds.   She has previously served on the boards of Amgueddfa Cymru and Ffilm Cymru.

She is a keen Welsh learner and has 2 adult Welsh speaking children (a classical singer and an animator).  In 2025 she received the Geraint Stanley Jones award from the Welsh Music Guild for her contribution to broadcasting Welsh music.

Welcoming the new member, Culture Minister, Jack Sargeant, said:

"I am pleased to announce the appointment of Christina Macaulay to Arts Council of Wales. She brings over thirty years of experience, knowledge and expertise to the role with her background in arts broadcasting. She will be an asset to a council set up to meet the challenges and opportunities which lie ahead in the arts sector."

Maggie Russell, Chair of ACW added:

"I am delighted that Christina Macaulay is joining ACW. Both her extensive professional experience and personal passion and commitment to the arts in Wales over many years will be a huge asset to both council colleagues and ACW staff."
