The Hip-Hop Cymru Exhibition that has been hosted in Eagles Meadow, Wrexham visits The Old Library, Treherbert from Thursday 28th to Saturday 30th March, with workshops in beatboxing, breakin’, music production, DJing and Rap; a graffiti ‘paint jam’ and a beatboxing showcase taking place on the Saturday.
The exhibition has been organised by Avant Cymru, alongside other members of the Hip Hop community including Larynx Entertainment and Oner Signs. It is the first of its kind in Wales, bringing together graffiti artists, breakers, rappers, DJs, MCs and fans, to share their stories and take part in a programme of events. It celebrates the global 50th anniversary of Hip Hop and raises the profile of Wales’ contribution. It is funded by the Heritage Lottery.
The exhibition includes a ‘fans bedroom’; a shop with books, t-shirts and other items; graffiti artwork walls; displays of items such as graffiti spray cans, vinyl records, promotional posters, and podcast interviews with those involved in the scene, in the past, and currently. It builds on Avant’s aim to work with communities to ‘remember the past, discuss the present, and create the future’ and to promote the Hip Hop ethos of peace, love, unity and having fun.”
The Treherbert event will feature graffiti, breakin’, music production and DJing workshops and a Beatbox showcase in partnership with FlowCase Wales’s international Beatbox event organised by Matthew Hann.
Jamie Berry of Avant Cymru (aka B-Boy Flexton), says: “The exhibition and events have introduced loads of young people and families to Hip Hop, and reminded the older generation of what they loved doing. Some people have now returned to taking part. We wanted to make sure that the exhibition toured to places that don’t attract so many events and opportunities.”
Rachel Pedley of Avant Cymru (aka B-Girl Welsh Poppy), says: “The exhibition and programme of events in Wrexham was important in being a space where we could gather as a community – we don’t have that anywhere else in the UK. It’s been so successful that Eagle’s Meadow have kindly allowed us to stay there, so we’re excited to see what will develop from there, and hope it’ll continue to bring benefits to the whole Hip Hop community in Wales.”
