Disability Arts Cymru is thrilled to announce the artists who have been selected for the Effaith commissions, in partnership with Amgueddfa Cymru and with Corsydd Calon Môn.
Congratulations to Kathryn Ashill and Catherine Taylor Parry!
Kathryn Ashill has been awarded a £10,000 commission working with Amgueddfa Cymru and Disability Arts Cymru. Their commission will be a performance to film, which will explore the disabled body and its relationship to natural bodies of water.
"As an artist with a visible mobility need and aid, I intend to frame my body on beaches and in rivers as a way of visually placing the disabled body in the environment."
Catherine Taylor Parry has been awarded a £2,000 commission working with Corsydd Calon Môn and Disabiltiy Arts Cymru. They will respond to the richness of the environment, particularly by using the abundance of colour and texture to create a vertically layered image, which suggests the changes that have taken place in the Corsydd site historically along with the natural changes.
"I will be thinking of the fen as a natural record of time, as the peat is created slowly over many years and it captures not just carbon but the life of plants, animals and the Corsydd history."
The standard of the applications was exceptionally high, creating a difficult decision for the selectors. Owain Gwilym, Disability Arts Cymru Executive Director, said:
"Disability Arts Cymru is proud to work alongside Amgueddfa Cymru and Corsydd Calon Môn to strengthen disabled representation in the arts in Wales. Developing the commissions was a rewarding process and the creativity and professionalism of the disabled artists who applied was exceptional."
Alan Whitfield, Disability Arts Cymru Visual Arts Officer, said:
"It is a really exciting time to see the level and range of work coming from the artists. The process of working with Amgueddfa Cymru and Corsydd Calon Môn has been very productive, being able to support and and learn from each other."
The commissions will be shown as part of Disability Arts Cymru's National Touring Exhibition: Effaith. This ambitious project will showcase powerful and innovative visual art by disabled artists at five leading arts venues across Wales, running from February 2026 to March 2027.
Effaith (Impact) will explore themes of nature, landscape and climate justice through the lens of disability. The exhibition offers audiences across Wales an opportunity to engage with disabled perspectives on one of the most urgent issues of our time. Learn more here.
