Today a new partnership has been announced between the National Centre for Learning Welsh and the Arts Council of Wales. The first step is appointing a Learn Welsh Coordinator by the Council.

The post is already advertised on the Council's website and we welcome applications. This new partnership further develops the joint work between the two organisations started in 2020/21 when there were three pilot schemes. The first was an evaluation of the needs of the sector. Then two Learn Welsh courses were held with Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru for arts freelancers.

Einir Siôn, Welsh Language Enabler at Arts Council of Wales said today:

"We are delighted to announce this new partnership between Arts Council of Wales and the National Centre for Learning Welsh. The partnership will mean the funding of this post through the National Centre’s ‘Work Welsh’ scheme, which aims to strengthen Welsh language skills in the workplace. We will create and co-ordinate a new Learn Welsh service for the arts sector which will answer this longstanding demand.

"The Coordinator will provide opportunities for individual artists, arts organizations and venues and our staff to develop their Welsh skills and confidence through relevant courses to build confidence and create language learning resources relevant to the arts.

"The Coordinator will respond to the recommendations of research currently underway by Arad for the Council - Welsh development pathways within the arts - into the needs of artists, organizations and arts venues in developing their Welsh skills."

Dona Lewis, Deputy Chief Executive and Director of Planning and Development for the National Centre for Learning Welsh, who leads the Work Welsh scheme said:

"Creating opportunities for people to learn and enjoy Welsh in their workplace is one of our priorities. By working flexibly and creating tailored learning programmes, we have already welcomed thousands of new learners from different sectors and organisations.

"Our close collaboration with the Arts Council has led to this latest positive development - the appointment of a coordinator to ensure we can meet the growing demand for Learn Welsh courses in the arts.

"This latest development is one to be celebrated and we look forward to continuing to work closely and productively with the Arts Council in the future."
