The Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod has a proud 76 year history of bringing global communities together through music, dance and creativity to promote peace and understanding. The Eisteddfod is acknowledged as one of the foremost world festivals and has even been nominated for the Nobel Prize for Peace. Over the years it has attracted cultural icons including Dylan Thomas, Dame Shirley Bassey and Luciano Pavarotti. In 2024, thanks to a new collaboration with Cuffe & Taylor, our evening concerts will extend over four weeks including Manic Street Preachers and Suede as well as Paloma Faith and more to be confirmed.
We are now seeking a freelance Artistic Director who will work closely with the Production Manager & Programmer, staff team, the Committees, the Board and volunteers to deliver an Eisteddfod that is exciting, innovative and reflective of our international peace-making mission. Key duties for the Artistic Director will be:
-
To work with staff & volunteers to oversee the daytime programme including the artistic programme for the field throughout the week. This programme should create unforgettable experiences of our schools and youth days as well as appealing and diverse programming for the general public attending the Eisteddfod.
-
To work with the Production Manager & Programmer to finalise the evening concert programme, including a Peace Concert
-
To work with the Eisteddfod team to maximise the impact and reach of the visiting international groups and also to ensure they benefit from a range of additional activities during their stay
-
To work with the Eisteddfod team to deliver a competition programme that is exciting and attractive to a broad range of competitors and that attracts performers from across the globe
-
To build on our partnerships with other cultural organisations to deliver long term, mutually beneficial plans.
-
To develop artistic interventions that help embed the Eisteddfod in our communities all year round. We have a limited budget so these interventions should be developed with grant funding or sponsorship opportunities in mind.
-
To work with the Eisteddfod team to begin shaping the programme for 2025
-
To write a closing report after the 2024 festival including recommendations for future years and a summation of the current state of play with each of our partner organisations.
The fee for this work will be £300 per day for 66 days, to be worked until the end of the contract on 1 October 2024. The majority of working days will be expected to be prior to the Eisteddfod in July and the Artistic Director will be expected to be on site throughout the festival. Travel and accommodation costs are included within the daily fee.
The Board will welcome alternative suggestions to the above fee structure and proposals for innovative ways of working.
To apply, please supply your CV and a maximum three x A4 outline of why you are interested in the work and your initial thoughts on how you would make an impact on the Eisteddfod. Alternatively, alongside your CV, please provide a video of up to 15 minutes. All applications must be received by 5pm on Tuesday 14 November.
