Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru is honoured to have received a UK Theatre nomination for Excellence in Touring. Huge thanks to our wonderful company team, as well as all the brilliant artists and freelance workers, who have contributed to this achievement.
UK Theatre is the UK’s leading theatre and performing arts membership organisation. We promote excellence, professional development, and campaign to improve resilience and increase audience across the sector. The award for Excellence in Touring acknowledges the crucial work of touring companies and their contributions to the resilience of the arts sector.
During the eligibility period (14 August 2023 – 28 August 2024), we staged 92 touring performances in around 50 different locations in Wales, partnering closely with venues, reaching more than 20,000 people with our programme of performances and participation projects. We employed over 260 freelancers, totalling payments of £350,000 to freelancers and contributing £180,000 to local economies on tour, including rural areas.
Our productions during this timeframe included:
- Rhinoseros – the first Welsh translation of Eugene Ionesco’s absurdist masterpiece (4 stars, The Stage and The Guardian)
- Swyn – a new dance show for 3-7 year olds in British Sign Language and Welsh
- Ie Ie Ie – a show about consent and healthy relationships co-created with young people
- Parti Priodas – a new comedy set on a wedding day, which sold out venues across Wales.
The fantastic companies ETT (English Touring Theatre) and Wise Children have also been nominated in the same category. We’d like to congratulate all fellow nominees, including Welsh National Opera and No Fit State who have been nominated for the Achievement in Opera award for their co-production Death In Venice.
All winners will be announced on 20 October 2024 at an award ceremony in London.
