Project Overview

Puzzle Junction, in partnership with Conwy County Borough Council, is delivering an imaginative and immersive schools project titled: ‘Elin y Cerrig – The Lost Guardian of the Limestone’

The project aims to educate and inspire pupils across Conwy about the rare invertebrates of the limestone habitat on the Great Orme and the Creuddyn area, through a dynamic in-school experience blending performance, interactive props, and environmental storytelling.

We are seeking a creative and practical Prop, Set, and Costume Designer to design and build two distinctive costumes for performers and a suite of engaging props for use in the classroom. These elements will form the visual and tactile core of an interactive learning journey for children aged 7–11, combining science education with theatrical storytelling.

Key Responsibilities

Costume Design (2 Performers)

  • Design and construct two visually distinctive, practical costumes reflecting characters or creature themes linked to the Orme's biodiversity
  • Ensure costumes are performance-ready, transportable, and comfortable for actors working in school environments
  • Work collaboratively with the creative team to develop the visual identity of the characters

Prop and Set Design

  • Design and build a set of interactive, durable, and child-safe props to support hands-on classroom engagement
  • Create visual and tactile learning tools that represent the limestone landscape and rare invertebrates (e.g. simulated terrain, magnified species models, discovery objects)
  • Ensure props align with the learning objectives of the programme and can be easily transported and set up within primary school classrooms

Person Specification

Essential:

  • Proven experience in set, prop and/or costume design, ideally for educational, immersive, or family audiences
  • Strong visual design and practical making skills
  • Ability to work independently and deliver high-quality work to deadlines
  • Understanding of safety and safeguarding in school settings
  • Comfortable working to budget and collaborating with a multidisciplinary team
