Menter Iaith Abertawe and R*E*P*E*A*T take over The Bunkhouse, Swansea this weekend for two collaborative gigs.
R*E*P*E*A*T Fanzine was set up in 1994 as a cut and paste homage to the vitriolic beauty of Manic Street Preachers, before quickly mutating into a record label, gig promoter and creaking website packed with news, reviews, interviews, art, and bile. In 2018 it relocated back home from Cambridge to Swansea and has quickly become a noisy fixture of the South Wales music scene. As part of the Mentrau Iaith network, Menter Iaith Abertawe’s work involves creating opportunities for people of all ages to use and enjoy the Welsh language in the Swansea area.
Friday the 24th of November sees a night of the finest heavy rock bands on the Welsh scene, featuring Alffa, Grey-FLX, Breichiau Hir, and People and Other Diseases.
Alffa are a history-making Welsh rock duo known for their explosive sound, raw energy, and for being the first Welsh-language band to reach a million streams on Spotify. Grey-FLX is the alias of Logan Powles, a talented multi-instrumentalist producer hailing from Swansea, who offers a vibrant and powerful live experience with his band. Cardiff 6-piece Breichiau Hir combine urgent aggression with melody, sitting somewhere between emo and punk, while People and Other Diseases are a primitive post-punk 3 piece.
Saturday the 25th of November sees an evening headlined by Los Blancos in support of their recently released second album, “Llond Llaw”. Released on Libertino Records, the band’s slacker-rock ethos can still be seen dripping from every note they play and permeates the type of character they sing about. Like Bukowski, Kerouac or Tom Waits, Los Blancos see the good in the bad, the dirty, and the broken. See and celebrate the beauty in the imperfect. Support comes from Akimbo, Cyn Cwsg, and Swan Hill.
Tickets to both gigs are only £8 in advance, and can be purchased here: www.ticketsource.co.uk/menter-iaith-abertawe
The Bunkhouse is an multi award winning bar, music venue & community space situated in the back streets of Swansea city centre giving a platform for local emerging artists & large touring bands. Established in 2017 by a collective team of music lovers & misfits, The Bunkhouse quickly became a staple of the music scene in South Wales as a small venue constantly punching above its weight.
These gigs are the latest in a project from Menter Iaith Abertawe to boost the Welsh language music scene in the city. The project will wrap up for 2023 the following weekend with Ynys, The Eggmen Whoooo!, and Y Dail live at Tŷ Tawe on Friday the 1st of December, with many more gigs for 2024 to be announced soon.
