The Arts Council of Wales are saddened to learn of the loss of the Rt Hon. Lord Dafydd Elis-Thomas.

Maggie Russell, Chair of Arts Council of Wales said,

“Dafydd Elis-Thomas was a cultural giant, and at this sad time we are reminded of all he gave to the arts and indeed the nation. He was always there with a sense of leadership, an inspiration who made things possible at moments where we all doubted ourselves. During his period as a bold and visionary Minister for Culture, Sport and Tourism in Wales, and indeed throughout his long political career, he was a consistent source of inspiration, his passion encouraging us to take risks for the good of the arts, and claim the place of Welsh culture in the World.”

The Rt Hon. Lord Dafydd Elis-Thomas was a member of the Welsh Arts Council until 1994 when the Regional Arts Associations and the Welsh Arts Council were merged and the Arts Council of Wales was formed.
