The BBC has announced that Lisa Tregale has been appointed Director of the BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales and will take up the role in the New Year.

Currently Head of Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra (BSO) Participate, Lisa is recognised across the music sector as both a champion for the arts and a real innovator in inclusion and music education.  She will become the Orchestra’s first female director.

As well as supporting the strategic direction of BSO and their ensembles over the last six years, Lisa has transformed the organisation’s connection with diverse communities across the region - introducing classical music to people of all ages for the very first time.

Rhodri Talfan Davies, Director of BBC Wales, said: “Lisa brings with her a wealth of experience – and a deep passion for music and its power to inspire and touch the lives of people from all backgrounds. I know her deep understanding of orchestral leadership and her instinctive ability to bring people together will equip her brilliantly for the challenge of leading such a successful and vibrant organisation.”

Lisa Tregale said: “I am delighted to be taking up this exciting role at the heart of Wales’ cultural life. With its distinctive role as both a broadcast and national symphony orchestra, I very much look forward to championing the orchestra and chorus within Wales, the UK and beyond.

Alan Davey, Controller of BBC Radio 3, said: “Lisa is a real innovator who has helped transform the profile and impact of the BSO over recent years. She will bring real insight and rigour to our work – and an absolute commitment to artistic excellence.”

Lisa is a trained saxophonist & vocalist and was the founding Chief Executive and Artistic Director of South West Music School – a training centre for exceptionally gifted young musicians. In this role, she played an active role in shaping music education strategy at a UK level.

Lisa has also held positions such as an assessor for Arts Council England and the PRS Foundation, a board member of the British Arts Festival Association and vice president of the European Conference of Promoters of New Music.

Last week, BBC NOW also announced that Ryan Bancroft, the 29-year-old American conductor, has been appointed Principal Conductor of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales
